California Statewide AirBnB Laws Coming?

There was an interesting article in the LA Times today that talks about California’s ongoing struggle with how to deal with short term vacation rentals.  Here is a link to the article.    Typically, short term vacation rentals are regulated by the local city.  This is true because the city is responsible for collecting transient occupancy taxes.  The short term vacation rules vary by City depending on minimum night stay, the percentage of taxes and the reporting requirements. New Vacation Rental Rules Proposed for Los Angeles

According to the Los Angeles Times, City councilmen Bonin and Wesson are proposing new regulations to bar vacation rentals that are not the owner’s primary residence. The proposed new regulation would still allow property owners to rent out spare rooms and to rent out their homes when they are out of town.   Property owners, however, could not rent out any home that is not their main residence. Airbnb Cuts Ties With 2 of Its Largest Hosts – Legal Implications

According to a recent article in the Los Angeles Times, Airbnb has cut ties with two of its largest Los Angeles area hosts and 10 of the 13 hosts with the most local listings as of October, 2014. The Times cites growing scrutiny from the Los Angeles City Hall as one potential reason for the moves Airbnb made. For some time now, local media outlets have been reporting on growing friction between the Los Angeles City Council and Airbnb over the collection of taxes.
